Welcome!

Making Things

My mamaw used to answer the phone with a ‘mmHello’ and though it sounded a bit like a question (who is this and how can I help you), to me the sound of her voice was a warm hug. If she was expecting your call the inflection added happy exclamation - mmHE-LLO!

Pondering how to welcome you to this space, the happy and excited mmHE-LLO! came first to mind.

This blog grew from my love of making things and sharing those things with friends. If you are here, you are a friend.

As the maker behind Charleston Bee Works, my shelves are stocked with books of recipes on herbalism, natural soap making, candles and wholesome skincare recipes. This blog is an extension of my love of making, of my desire to share the recipes I find so that you can try them, too. In my herbalism studies I come across many wonderful products easily made in your home kitchen and I hope that by sharing some basic how-to’s, you will find yourself becoming a maker as well.

I may occassionally share a bit about the beautiful state I live in, because West Virginia is worth braggin on. You may also find food recipes, especially those involving local honey. Who knows where this will take us. I’m just glad you’re here.

These recipes can be made with most of the tools you have in your kitchen cupboard. For craft supplies I always recommend seeking out fair trade, environmentally-friendly ingredients, and buy local products when possible. You can also find all these ingredients at the unnamed, next-day delivering company that haunts our doorsteps.

My favorite online craft suppliers:

Mountain Rose Herbs
Bramble Berry
Makesy
Wholesale Supplies
Bulk Apothecary

If you’re lucky enough to have a local co-op, check there to buy herbs, oils and butters in bulk. You may also find supplies at your local big box store.

Let me know if you have any questions or kind comments along the way. I hope you find a peace in the process of making things.

Y’all be careful and I’ll holler at ya later.

Brooke
